What to wear
The question I'm asked most often before a senior photography session is 'What should I wear for our photos?' The single most important consideration when choosing your outfits is that you feel comfortable and confident. It's important to like how you look in your pictures since you'll be keeping them forever. Focus on achieving a cohesive look and dress in outfits that will allow your photos to have a timeless feel. Based on my senior photography experience, I'm sharing some suggestions here that will improve your pictures and ensure they'll look just as good in thirty years' time as they do today. Your clothing should reflect your individual style.
Feel free to bring 2 to 3 outfits with you to the session. This will allow you to have a few different looks ranging from casual to more formal.
Make sure the outfits you select are comfortable and well fitting. Things that are too tight, too loose or outfits that simply don’t feel good will not photograph as nicely as something you’re comfortable in that is well-fitting. To help your senior feel relaxed in front of the camera their clothes should allow them to move freely - to go from sitting to standing etc.
Please feel free to text me pictures of the outfits you are considering - I’m more than happy to help with this and give input!
Don’t forget about your feet! Please select shoes that will match your look!
You can bring your ironed/steamed clothes on a hanger to the session so that they don’t wrinkle before you put them on.
Some people like to bring accessories and or jewelry to go with the different outfits they choose. This can include sports jerseys/uniforms, musical instruments, sporting equipment - the sky is the limit! Please let me know ahead of time if you’re thinking of incorporating any of these items into our session so I can plan for them!
As far as color goes, there are a few general guidelines that tend to work well. Please avoid wearing any bright neon colors, while vibrant, these colors tend to leave color casts on skin. Depending on the location we’ve selected, complementary colors work beautifully with setting (if you google “Color Wheel” you can look to get ideas of what colors pair well - they should be opposite of each other on the wheel - for example green/red, blue/orange etc.) - this will vary for each individual and we can discuss this together to make the best choice. Solid colors typically work best when possible, but if you choose an outfit with a pattern I would avoid anything too busy or bold. Another thing to consider is wearing cream instead of pure white clothing since white has a tendency to wash people out.
Please bring any personal items you may need for touching up your look (hair products, make-up etc) along with you to your session.
